Impromptu Dancing

When I was shooting the Fiesta de Santa Fe, I spotted an old neighbor, who told me that her young daughter was going to be dancing with other dancers in a show. I had my camera with me, so I decided to see if I could get some good photos of my friend’s daughter.

It was all a bit boring, until the girl, along with her friend, decided to dance, as little girls will do. As they twirled around in pure delight, I was snapping photos, hoping to get some good ones. In a crowded situation, I haven’t figured out how to get the non-competing backgrounds I like (without resorting to more Photoshop than I care to do), but I still think these photos are full of the pure joy that is little girls having fun.

  1. I no longer have the advantage πŸ™‚ They’re beautiful!!!!

  2. These are delightful!

  3. Adorable! πŸ™‚

As for the background, you could use a telephoto lens, zoom in and use a VERY shallow DOF (aperture of 2.8, 3.2, or 4).

Otherwise, I would add a ‘vignette blur’ in PS to isolate the girls.

    • Thanks for your suggestions! πŸ™‚ Those shots were shot at f/2.8, and it was a mid range telephoto/zoom, not a long one, as I wanted to include both girls in the photo. Also, these were shot in a crowd, so I had to be near the girls to not include people in the foreground, so a long telephoto lens, would not have worked, unfortunately. So not an ideal shooting situation for sure.

I could have played with Photoshop to make the girls stand out, but nah, these shots were for my personal use, so I left them the way they were. Good suggestions though, if the situation had been right. πŸ™‚ Thanks as always for your feedback!

  4. Such delightful photograph!!

  5. Ahhh to be a kid again!!

  6. Aww….cute! πŸ™‚ I have yet to shoot people!

    • Thank you! I want to shoot more people, but it’s a bit out of my comfort zone. Starting with kids, who are natural show offs, is a good way for me to kind of ease into it, and it’s fun! πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by!

  7. They are so cute…and I like their costumes.

  8. They are so lovely, and how beautiful their dresses… Thank you dear Katie, with my love, nia

    • Thanks, Nia. I really liked those dresses, it really does make the photos feel different. There was a whole school of girls in different dresses getting ready to take the stage, but these girls were the only ones I saw who just started dancing for fun.

  9. Wonderful!
Can it be that I had such joy when I was a little girl? Thanks for an almost-memory —
