Not a Conquistador
I’ve looked around WordPress for great photography, and I’ve seen some wonderful street photography, that I’d really like to try. I’m not sure Santa Fe is conducive to street photography though. Maybe I’m wrong, or at least I hope I am.
This is my first try at street photography. When I was photographing the Fiesta de Santa Fe, I was taking a break, when in front of me, I saw this woman dressed distinctly not like a conquistador, which is prevalent at this festival, so of course, I had to take a photo. A quick composition, and waiting for the man to come into sight, and then I took the picture. I do wish I had my better lens with me, so the photo would have been sharper, etc., but for shooting this event, I wanted one lens that had the widest range. And I’m still satisfied with the photo.
Santa Fe is a strange little town, but for me, I thought this was just a wonderful sight.

Love the bright colors of the outfit. They really stand out against the darker background. I bet you could find some interesting photos in the plaza where folks sell the handmade jewelry!!
I really like the Native Americans (nice people) at the Palace of the Governor’s portal, but that’s been shot to death to be honest. But, that being said, you’ve given me an idea– early in the morning when the working folk (including the Native Americans) are congregating and setting up, and just talking and being themselves, now that would be interesting to me. Mmm. now that does hold promise. So thank you! 🙂
Street shots of Santa Fe, downtown when the flashy skiers come to town! And the cowboys are out. It’s not Urban NY but Santa Fe IS a flavor all its own. Maybe shooting western boots and ski boots…. Isn’t what you are thinking of… But each place should tell a different story. New Orleans would have different shots from Montana. Just hang out and people watch in that square……. Or try the skate park….thats a different crew!
I have been taking graffiti shots. East Tn style. They are funny, compared to other areas. But its authentic to here.
Those are certainly some great ideas (and thank you!), but it has to appeal to my eye, which is the issue, here. 🙂 The Plaza is a bit too touristy for me, but cowboys and skateboarders would be interesting. Thanks for getting me to think more on this!
I was in Santa Fe in May. There certainly seemed to be a fair share of interesting street folk to shoot.
The thing is, I’ve lived and walked these streets for almost a decade now, so it’s not that interesting to me, anymore. Well, when the SUV drove into the building almost all the way up to his windshield wipers, now that was a bit interesting (and I did get shots). And he wasn’t even hurt. 🙂 Oh, but if you’re talking about homeless people, yes we do have a fair share here, and around some of the bars there are some interesting non-tourists. I just have to figure out what my eye wants to shoot, I think.

Yeah, I wonder too, and where was she going at lunch hour dressed like that. In a big city, there’s be a ton of answers, but in Santa Fe? 🙂
Street photography is tougher than it looks, especially if you are carrying a DSLR with big lens. It makes it tough to be surreptitious and get those candid shots. I haven’t much luck when shooting here in Billings. I like this shot though. The backward mask makes this image work. I think you might have inspired me to give street photography another go tomorrow.
I think you’re right about that, Lloyd. I want to capture images where the person doesn’t know they’re being captured, or where they don’t show it. The thing about Santa Fe, is there are so many tourists in the downtown area, that everyone has DSLR with a lens on it, so unless I have the 70-200mm lens on my camera, I can blend in pretty well (although what I’m shooting generally isn’t what a tourist would shoot, so i do get my share of looks). I’d love to see what you come up with!
I’ve thought about ‘street photography’, but I’m actually afraid of what I’ll see… LOL There are some odd things to be seen on the streets of our city, would probably be accused of being ‘paparazzi’ by some of the more ‘colorful characters’…. 😉

I enjoy your photos! Especially like the aliens. I’m still a novice street photographer also but I like really like to use a relatively long lens to catch candid shots of people being themselves without knowledge of the camera. I love Santa Fe but when I lived in NM I was not that into photography. I plan on coming back this winter just for some photography opportunities. I look forward to sharing our views of the land of enchantment!
