Don’t Pick up Your Trash until after I Take a Photo

Santa Fe, being a small city, has a good number of cigar clubs around town, which kind of confuses me, but sometimes provides for photo opportunities. I was walking a few doors down from one, and I spotted the end of a hand rolled cigar on the ground. I thought how prettily the sun shone on it, and how it looked great against the texture of the asphalt, so I took this photo. This was taken with my 105mm macro lens at f/3.3.

In the “great minds think alike” department…

Did you know that Irving Penn did a series of still lifes on cigarette butts? I think he took his into the studio first though. Here is a link to one that sold at Christie’s for a mere 33K.

    • OMG, $33,000! Wow. I had never seen photos like that before. Wow, wow, wow. Thanks so much for sharing this, Mark! Ooh, and your photos of that old Ford, had me trying to take some interesting photos of a Ducati bike yesterday. Didn’t turn out though. šŸ™‚

  5. Creative use of an unconsidered trifle.
