Halloween – Candy Corn … Yummy :)

I love Halloween and the traditions that generally go along with any holiday (see this post for Christmas candy), so I went out and bought a bag of candy corn and took some photos.

I put the candy corn in a couple of different places in my house where it would get direct sun, so that there would be some interesting shadow play, and I started shooting. This is the shot I liked best (it was also the first shot that I took; funny how that works πŸ˜‰ ).

I had other photos that were just the candy corn with shadows, but I finally liked this one the best for its more complicated composition, along with the heavier shadows and the different levels and textures. This was shot on the window sill in my office; the green texture is the window screen with my tomato plants behind it.

Shot with my 105mm macro lens at f/3.3. Happy Halloween!

  1. what a great way to shoot the candy… love the play of light and shadows- LOVE candy corn any way…this just makes me want to make a quick trip to the store!

  2. I guess photo experimentation is as good an excuse as any to buy a bag of candy. πŸ™‚

    • Good point, Matt! I had in my mind exactly what I wanted, so not really an experiment, but it was certainly a great excuse to but some junk food. πŸ™‚ Thanks for your comment, Matt.

  3. Very beautiful image of an ordinary subject. Certainly a way to see it differently.

  4. Cool πŸ™‚

  5. Great shot! The shadows are wonderful! Briliant color!

  6. I know what you mean about the first shot often being the best. As you say, good composition, shadows and texture in this image.

  7. I think I just can “steal” Whimsical KT;s comment “Great shot! The shadows are wonderful! Briliant color!” πŸ™‚

  8. What a unique image! The light and shadows work wonderfully together, as do the in and out of focus areas. Great work here!

  9. I like the lighting here, how it highlights random parts of the candy corn but isn’t uniform across the image. It makes for an interesting shot.

    • I agree on that, David. The other candy corn shots had much more even lighting/shadows, and it just wasn’t as interesting, even when I got what i thought was great composition. Thanks for your comment!

  10. I had fun wandering through your blog. Love your gates photos. Still more to discover…. I can’t agree more that a photograph of an ordinary thing can be so beautiful. These candy corns for example, have a mysterious feel to them. (I gotta admit though that if I’d bought a bag of candy corn, there would be maybe three left before I even think of shooting them… ) Best wishes (and thanks for your kind comments). Lauren

    • Thank you so much for visiting and looking through my blog. I love hearing that people are doing that. I’ll be posting some more gate photos, so stay tuned for them. πŸ™‚ I love your thought on ordinary things. I love when I can turn them into something interesting and photographically pretty. I’d share the candy corn with you. πŸ™‚ Take care, Lauren and thanks so much for your kind comment.
