Tree Silhouetted Against a Pale Morning Sky

Here’s a shot I took back in mid-October. I walked down this little street type thing that we have a lot of here in Santa Fe; places that look like streets, but you’re not really sure if they are, as they could just be driveways. Older Santa Fe has plenty of these, and sometimes they have the most interesting old houses on them.

This street really didn’t have much on it though, but I looked up and saw a tree that had lost some leaves from the drought we’re going through. I thought the branches made an interesting outline against the pale early morning sky. I love the shapes that a leafless tree can make, so I composed a shot, and this is what I got.

As I walked back to the main road, I promised the tree that I would be back in about a month when she’s lost all her leaves, as I think I can get some more of these stark, dramatic shots. (:

This was taken with my 35-70 mm lens at f/6.3. In processing the image, I desaturated the color and increased the contrast to make things more dramatic.

  1. Wow! Pure Black and White.

It reminded me of when I took a shot of a leaf-less tree years ago with my mobile camera. It was not a silhouette though šŸ™‚

  11. Hi Katie – Love it! It could be the type of photograph that would make a good book cover for a psychological thriller. By the way, thanks for the comment on my blog. It was much appreciated! Love your work, particularly Santa Fe! It is just so different and reminds me of watching ‘western’ movies and playing ‘Cowboys and Indians’ (probably not politically correct nowadays) when I was a wee Scots lad in Glasgow!

    Cheers

  24. This shot would be perfect for a double exposure. You could like this shot and use it as a layer mask allowing the black portions to show through to something else. You might try it and get some interesting results.
