Old Door, Old Door Knob and I Like It :)
I took this image last week. It’s a door I’ve passed probably a hundred times, in an old alley near my house. I love this alley, as it makes me feel like I’m 70 years in the past, and time traveling is just fun. (:
On this day I had already taken a photo of another door knob on an even older door, and when I saw this door, I decided to try it also. The other photo didn’t come out (the peeling paint didn’t work on that one), but I really love the texture of this door, along with the straight lines and the shapes.
Shot with my 105mm lens at f/7.1

What stories hide behind it, I wonder…
Marion Driessen said this on January 2, 2012 at 7:20 am |
Ah, yes, stories! I love walking alleys, as people don’t keep their backyards/wall/doors in as good of condition as the front of their property. 🙂

I love this image. The patina on that old knob is just fabulous. A macro shot of that would make a great texture to use. Really nice composition also. Beautiful work per usual.

I did use my macro lens on this one, but not really close up. 🙂 I think you’re right about a close up of the wood texture too. Thanks so much, Mobius! 🙂

OH I LOVE THIS!! I take such images allllllllllll of the time! I thought I was the only one. 😀
And every once in a while, someone will notice them, as I zip past them in my folder where I keep the prints that I have placed for sale or had auctioned. They understand them! They ooo and ahhh at architecture and design and line and peeling paint and age and function and… 🙂
I have some amazing blue doors and then some stacked doors that lean against an old house near to the door that is still affixed to it.

I remember reading once that the major advantage old age has over youth is depth of character. Something new is pretty in itself, but when it is weathered, you know it has lived a life. This door and door knob have so much character! Oh, the stories they could tell, the people they could describe, the hands that have touched them, held them, opened them. A shiny new door and door knob convey none of that. Love this photo!
Dezra Despain said this on January 2, 2012 at 8:06 am |
Thanks so much for your comment, Dezra. As I age, I agree with the statement that age has an advantage over youth in ways, and that the character of age is indeed endearing. Loved your comment and thanks so much for visiting my blog! 🙂

Thats great. 🙂 I live in an old house (its about 100 years old) and every so often I stare at the beat up knobs and think about shooting them. But I haven’t quite figured out how I want to do it yet.
This door and knob has character! Great shot.
Cin said this on January 2, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
Ah, glad you live in a mysterious old house, Cin! My house is old too, but it was so simple 100 years ago, that there isn’t much remaining old after it was redone and made larger. 😦

Great shot, Katie! Something I’ve noticed about door knobs some time ago is that they are like faces… In this one, top two screws are the eyes, knob: nose, keyhole: the mouth saying “oh”! Lovely creature!

Hi, Katie, I am very surprised that only four of all the folks who have commented on this so far have mentioned the face, and only one of them referred to Alice. As soon as I saw it for the first time, my mind’s eye immediately flashed back to the dooknob in Wonderland that squirmed away when Alice tried to use it to open the door. The Disney artist(s) must have been inspired by just such a door–maybe even this one! Good stuff!
