Nice and Normal – A Child’s Wagon in the Snow

Here’s another of those Nice and Normal photographs. If you’d like, you can see the other images here.

I was walking around my neighborhood the morning after a snow, and I saw a wagon sitting in a yard. I just loved the look of it with the shape and color against the snow and the greenery, so I decided to take this image.

A wagon stopped by snow but still waiting for sunnier days of play. (:

Shot with my 35-70mm lens at f/16.

  1. Child’s wagon! I wish I had one like that. It would be so useful. It sure made a nice shot, framed the way you did.

  2. Very reminiscent. I can hear the giggles now 😉

  3. Very clean and beautiful photo. The colours and shapes are fantastic and above all love the snow, as i don’t get any here 🙂

  4. Nice one Katie! You can still hear the children’s laughter 🙂

  5. love the light and the shadows!

  6. A very nice (and normal) photo. However, it tells a little story. It is a sign of winter waiting spring, the little wagon waiting for the little kids to play. 🙂

  7. I just want to be there, right now! It’s beautiful, snow and sunny too. Great photo. 🙂

  8. We have one of these wagons – although the sides have long been gone because the children always climbed over them and they eventually gave up the ghost! We took the children everywhere in the wagon – or took their stuff and they walked…now I use it in the garden even though it really has seen better days. The memories are abundant! Thanks for the photo.

    • Ah, what wonderful memories! I remember fondly the wagon of my childhood too, so thanks so much for bringing back those memories for me. Glad the wagon is still useful even in it’s older state. Those things deserve to still be around. Thanks for your comment, Paula. 🙂

  9. Ah, very nice. Twill be a much different scene in the spring. 🙂

  10. Lovely!

  11. Great shot Katie! You guys got a good dose of snow!!! Love that… waiting for sunny days to play!

  12. Nice photo..Katie! We have one that holds a few plants..

  13. Nice shot, Katie!

  14. This is a gorgeous snowy picture. It makes me wish we had some real snow in Atlanta. Happy New Year.

  15. That wagon looks like fun…even with all the snow in it.

  16. Of course: Nice!!!

  17. excellent again

  18. Great composition. I love the muted winter colors in the snow. Beautiful, Katie.

    Peace

  19. Such a nice, wintery feel to this one. Nice capture!

  20. Here in England that image wouldn’t be “normal” as we don’t have a tradition of children’s wagon’s. It makes me think of the cartoon Peanuts and the little sister pulling the potted plant around in E.T. But a fabulous photo. Happy New Year.

    • OH, I love this. Thank you! I didn’t know that wagons were a particular thing for American kids (and others I’m sure). I can see the Peanuts cartoon and ET too. Thank you so much for the comment and for visiting my blog! 🙂

  21. I love this one Katie. I’m back & am sure gonna try to catch up with everybody. Great shot.

  22. Hey! You took my wagon! 😉

Seriously, I have one just like it collecting dust in the attic. Yours looks nicer out in the snow.

  23. Great composition – the snow looks lovely and cool (especially as it’s been so hot on my side of the world lately).

  24. hi Katie! I like the topic, the point of view and angle of the wagon and as a suggestion, if I may be so bold…what about cropping the shot just below the top of the bush?
My thought is that doing that eliminates the distracting background and makes it just about the wagon. But that’s the way I see it. I have no intention to offend and please feel free to critique mine. It helps me grow.Jane

    • No offense taken, Jane. 🙂 We all see things differently. I don’t mind the background. I think it shows the wagon as being alone and just waiting. That’s how I saw it. And cropping it above the bush would play with the composition, and I’m not sure the shot would work that way. Had I taken it differently, then it would have. 🙂 This really was my only choice for the photo, as there was a fence in front of me, etc.

I also used a smaller aperture, as the bushes in the foreground were out of focus with a more wide open aperture, which looked wrong to my eye, but of course, that made the background come in focus also. Still, I liked this photo a lot. 🙂

Thanks as always for your comments! 🙂

  25. Its nice and serene. 🙂 Excellent.

  26. Is it really snow? You get snow there? We have none here in the east. Skiing has been terrible. Cold, warm, it just hasn’t seemed like winter yet. One freakish storm before all the leaves fell and that’s been it.

    • Yep, New Mexico does get snow (lots of it in the Northern part of the state). Skiing is great here too. We have lots of ski resorts. We get cold here too. It was in the single digits in December. So four season for most of this state. 🙂

  27. beautiful…. !

  28. Wow! The snow gives the world a magical feel to it!

  29. Nice, normal and cool. Great shot Katie.

  30. Katie, there’s a crispness and clarity to your images that, for lack of a better word, feels very Zen. And the wheelbarrow is marvelous. Inevitably for me it calls to mind the short (and Zen-like) W C Williams poem:

    so much depends
    upon

    a red wheel
    barrow

    glazed with rain
    water

    beside the white
    chickens.

No white chickens, but snow instead, which is even better. Me gusta! How many of us have wagon memories from childhood or elsewhere, as all our comments attest.

    • Ah, thank you so much for that. It just makes me smile. I do love simplicity in my photos. Maybe it’s an alternative to the mess in my mind? 😉 Thanks so much for the poem too. Thank you!

  31. lovely shot, it must be nice having snow during winter, we get lots of rain & really cold days but no snow

  32. I love the dappled light playing on the wall and the wagon, and the contrast between the warm tones of the architecture and the cool blue-white of the snow. This is beautiful.

  33. Very sweet photo. Nicely framed.

  34. Lovely shot, Katie! [as usual…]

  35. Beautiful photo!

  36. It has been years since I’ve seen a wagon like this. Nice shot.

  37. This brings back fond memories, snow and red wagons! Lovely!

  38. I envy you the snow! We didn’t have any in Lithuania or UK 😦 Lovely winter picture, cold and crisp 😀

  39. love the little red wagon…love the playfulness implied…

  40. In a (childish) way, it seems kind of sad that the “little red wagon” can’t be on it’s journey because of the snow!!

    I Love This!!

  41. Adorable! You caught some lovely light and colors here too. And you know how I can’t resist a snow scene …..

  42. That’s lovely. Quaint, even, in the best possible way. 🙂

  43. The wagon has a beautiful contrast to the snow. There is also some wonderful light in the background.

  44. Wonderfully captured, Katie!
Makes me feel a bit nostalgic, even…
    🙂

  45. Oh my goodness, I loved this one. Made me think, again, about “A Christmas Story”… how we used to have wagons and sleds made of wood, rather than everything being molded plastic. Love the snow.

  46. Ohhh it looks chilly, I cant believe there is so much snow. Right now (in summer) Im thinking Id love another winter with snow- we dont get it here in Hamilton!

  47. I didn’t think wagons like that were still around! Somehow this reminds me of the movie The Christmas Story, but I didn’t see any leg lamps in a window. 🙂

  48. Lovely image, very nicely composed 🙂

  49. Cute wagon 🙂

  50. Love this shot!

  51. Beautiful photograph the snow looks great.

  52. I LOVE THIS :):):)
