Nice and Normal – A Child’s Wagon in the Snow
Here’s another of those Nice and Normal photographs. If you’d like, you can see the other images here.
I was walking around my neighborhood the morning after a snow, and I saw a wagon sitting in a yard. I just loved the look of it with the shape and color against the snow and the greenery, so I decided to take this image.
A wagon stopped by snow but still waiting for sunnier days of play. (:
Shot with my 35-70mm lens at f/16.

Child’s wagon! I wish I had one like that. It would be so useful. It sure made a nice shot, framed the way you did.

A very nice (and normal) photo. However, it tells a little story. It is a sign of winter waiting spring, the little wagon waiting for the little kids to play. 🙂

Oh, I love this Bob, I agree, the wagon is waiting for sunnier weather and the kids to play – patient but eager. Thanks, Bob!

We have one of these wagons – although the sides have long been gone because the children always climbed over them and they eventually gave up the ghost! We took the children everywhere in the wagon – or took their stuff and they walked…now I use it in the garden even though it really has seen better days. The memories are abundant! Thanks for the photo.
Paula Turner said this on January 3, 2012 at 8:21 am |
Ah, what wonderful memories! I remember fondly the wagon of my childhood too, so thanks so much for bringing back those memories for me. Glad the wagon is still useful even in it’s older state. Those things deserve to still be around. Thanks for your comment, Paula. 🙂

Here in England that image wouldn’t be “normal” as we don’t have a tradition of children’s wagon’s. It makes me think of the cartoon Peanuts and the little sister pulling the potted plant around in E.T. But a fabulous photo. Happy New Year.
ziggyshortcrust said this on January 3, 2012 at 2:39 pm |
OH, I love this. Thank you! I didn’t know that wagons were a particular thing for American kids (and others I’m sure). I can see the Peanuts cartoon and ET too. Thank you so much for the comment and for visiting my blog! 🙂

hi Katie! I like the topic, the point of view and angle of the wagon and as a suggestion, if I may be so bold…what about cropping the shot just below the top of the bush?
My thought is that doing that eliminates the distracting background and makes it just about the wagon. But that’s the way I see it. I have no intention to offend and please feel free to critique mine. It helps me grow.Jane
janechese said this on January 3, 2012 at 5:52 pm |
No offense taken, Jane. 🙂 We all see things differently. I don’t mind the background. I think it shows the wagon as being alone and just waiting. That’s how I saw it. And cropping it above the bush would play with the composition, and I’m not sure the shot would work that way. Had I taken it differently, then it would have. 🙂 This really was my only choice for the photo, as there was a fence in front of me, etc.
I also used a smaller aperture, as the bushes in the foreground were out of focus with a more wide open aperture, which looked wrong to my eye, but of course, that made the background come in focus also. Still, I liked this photo a lot. 🙂
Thanks as always for your comments! 🙂
KatiesCameraBlog said this on January 4, 2012 at 8:40 am |
Well thought out, really hope to do more of that myself when I “see” a potential shot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Always a pleasure, Jane

Is it really snow? You get snow there? We have none here in the east. Skiing has been terrible. Cold, warm, it just hasn’t seemed like winter yet. One freakish storm before all the leaves fell and that’s been it.
Victor Ho said this on January 3, 2012 at 6:27 pm |
Yep, New Mexico does get snow (lots of it in the Northern part of the state). Skiing is great here too. We have lots of ski resorts. We get cold here too. It was in the single digits in December. So four season for most of this state. 🙂

Katie, there’s a crispness and clarity to your images that, for lack of a better word, feels very Zen. And the wheelbarrow is marvelous. Inevitably for me it calls to mind the short (and Zen-like) W C Williams poem:
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.
No white chickens, but snow instead, which is even better. Me gusta! How many of us have wagon memories from childhood or elsewhere, as all our comments attest.
adruidway said this on January 3, 2012 at 9:18 pm |
Ah, thank you so much for that. It just makes me smile. I do love simplicity in my photos. Maybe it’s an alternative to the mess in my mind? 😉 Thanks so much for the poem too. Thank you!

I love the dappled light playing on the wall and the wagon, and the contrast between the warm tones of the architecture and the cool blue-white of the snow. This is beautiful.
