Portrait of a Leaf – 3 – Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Thanks to everyone who likes these portraits of leaves. I truly appreciate your feedback. (: Time for another one. If you’d like to see the other portraits of leaves, you can see them here “Portrait of a Leaf.”

I saw this leaf about the same time I saw the leaves that were running away from the snow. I liked the way this leaf was in the iced tire track of a car. Something about it and the ice just caught me, so I composed this shot.

Keep warm, little guy!

Shot with my 105mm macro lens at f/3.2.

  1. Tee hee… cute!

  2. Nice concept, i always forget to take pics of the small things, i think you would like the treeporn site on tumblr its
    really cool…jus a bit bigger scale…

  3. I love leaf portraits. So poignant!

  4. Sure looks cold!
We are getting heavy snow right now, only the second storm of the season.

  5. The cold is sure puttin’ the squeeze on this poor leaf. Nice capture.

  6. Poor leaf, someone should get it out of the ice 😉

  7. koi fish on ice……

  8. Another nice image in this series, Katie! You certainly have an eye for these kinds of shots! Cheers!

  9. I really like this. The orange sepia stands out nicely from the lovely gray – blue gray of the snow. I think you could also have this in your abstract section.

  10. Poor cold little leaf. ; )

  11. I like how it seems to be scurrying toward (or away from) that black hole in the ice. For many years I lived in Minnesota, so am familiar with ice in all its forms. It can really be an interesting subject — like that alley-coffee shot in the previous post!

  12. Very nice! 🙂

  13. Beautiful. The leaf contrasts nicely with the ice. I love the comparison of the crisp, curling leaf and brittle, cold ice. Nicely done.

  14. Almost looks like it’s heading for (or venturing out from) that little ice cave!
Might be a bit warmer under there (they do say snow is a good insulator)!
    Very nicely captured, Katie!
    🙂

  15. I love how the clumps of ice create a dramatic effect, together with the colour contrast ice – leaf. I feel for the little leaf though, he looks so helpless 🙂
So great how you capture these things!

  16. Great shot…that looks about how cold it is here today.

  17. Beautiful composition, Katie. It’s amazing how you can bring out the beauty on any everyday object.

  18. Lovely image, Katie

  19. Love your process Katie! (and) Do great minds really think alike ~ YEP!

  20. You know, I’m loving all your snow images! I love the winter, and I’m very jealous that you have some of the white stuff, but we don’t! Surprising for this part of the country, this time of year! Although we did get a sprinkling this morning. But this time last year we were buried under a couple of feet of the stuff. I’d better be careful what I wish for.

  21. stop being so awesome katie lol
ever since i was a little girl i’ve liked leaves.. i’ve accepted thats probably weird of me, but i really love seeing these shots
i’ve never known anyone else to appreciate leaves, like you do

  22. I love your shots with the 105mm macro lens.

A Canon 100mm IS macro lens is on my wish list, with a view to purchasing one next month. Hope I can meet the high standard you have set.

  23. He just wasn’t as fast as the other leaves and the snow caught him.

It is a very pretty image though; it’s contrasting… the colours of Autumn are being enveloped by the colours of the Winter ‘come here my pretty’ springs to mind… :/

  24. Such a brave little leaf.

  25. I can almost feel the crisp snow and ice underfoot … but that brown leaf somehow looks pretty laid back … great shot, Katie! It captures that “double crunch” when you step on snow or a dried out leaf! Texture and sound conveyed visually, somehow!

  26. It is really very cold! Nice photo, Katie. How cute this leaf looks. 🙂

  27. Very nice contrast between the color & texture of the leaf and the snow.

  28. awww poor, I think it’s time to go… 🙂 Nice shot 🙂

  29. I love the mixing of seasons.. the ice of winter and the brown leaf of autumn… mother nature never ceases to share uniqueness and beauty with us.
