Stone Sentry

First, a note — I’m leaving early today and will be gone for a few weeks. I plan on still posting photos, as I’ll still be taking them. I’ll be busy though, so I’ll probably get behind on responding to comments and visiting all my favorite blogs. But please do keep visiting, liking and leaving comments. I really love getting the feedback. And again, thank you for all of the support!

When I noticed this guy a while ago, I wondered how I hadn’t noticed him a long time before that. He is a large stone sculpted head that sits on the end of a wall on a property near downtown Santa Fe. He’s in front of a home that is around a hundred years old, and he isn’t easily seen, as most of his features have been weathered and are almost smooth.

I think most people don’t even see him as they pass him by. It took some good shadowing for me to really see him, but when I did, I was just so thrilled.

I wanted to take a photo of him, but without the right shadowing, he looked like nothing but a large round stone. Then one day it snowed, and that changed everything. It even gave him an eye, which is almost totally smoothed down. But in the snow, it’s there, and it looks wonderful, so I took this photo.

The Stone Sentry faithfully protecting the home for all time. Kind sir, please guard me and keep me safe on my trip, I ask of you. (:

Shot with my 35-70mm lens at f/2.8.

  11. Really like how the snow gently hides the stone–the strength of stone and the ephemeral quality of the snow are highlighted by the soft background–nicely done. Enjoy your travels–hope that you get to share some photographs from the trip, Sally

  31. I’m always impressed when photographers get the white balance and exposure right on scenes with snow in them. It’s harder than one would think! This is a nice shot, Katie.

Travel safe and I’ll watch for your updates.

  32. Lovely image (as always).
It’s amazing how much more one sees when through the camera lens – things that one would walk straight by as though they are invisible on other occasions.

  47. Oh, I love it!!! We STILL have had NO recordable snowfall here in north central Pennsylvania… our weather is very strange this year. Thank you for sharing the snow. 😉

  48. Beautifully caught – especially with the snow for bonus effects! One of the beauties of photography is being able to spot the things that 99% of other folk just pass by without noticing.

  49. So you keep finding life in daily (otherwise) lifeless objects 🙂 Cool.
