Something Different — Southern Colorado Landscape
Southern Colorado is just gorgeous. I used to go camping and hiking up there in the Rio Grande National Forest. You could go days without seeing anyone, and at night, not a light in sight to interfere with the stars. It was just beautiful.
In this part of the forest, you don’t have the huge mountains that you have in other parts of the state, but a more subtle beauty that I really enjoy. And it isn’t as popular for recreation as other parts of the state, so you get all the solitude you can handle.
This photo was taken back when I was using my first DSLR, the Nikon D70 with the kit lens. Even though this wasn’t pro equipment, I still really like the way this photo turned out. It was taken late in the day during the summer, and the light was just beautiful. So please remember, that equipment isn’t the end all to achieving good photos. It’s the eye behind the equipment and knowing how to use what you have. Lesson over. 🙂 Hope you enjoy this photo!
Shot with an 18-70mm lens at f/11.

Nice one, Katie. Looks like a wonderful place; the solitude must be splendid!
With regards to equipment, I remember reading somewhere that looking at someone’s photos and then saying ‘wow, you must have a good camera’ is the equivalent of being invited around for dinner, enjoying a lovely meal and then saying ‘that was delicious – you must have good cooker’.

What a nice shot Katie. The kind of colours you’d see in a painting… Soothing tranquility! [of course it’s all to do with the eye!]

Love it Katie! I can “feel” the light…I love photos that give us the option to “feel” the space you were in. Thanks for sharing

This photo is beautiful. I just loved the transformations of the green color in the entire photo. Brilliantly captured! 🙂
I hope to see the night stars photo, Katie. I love stars too. 🙂

While it must be great to be able to purchase professional equipment, I absolutely agree that the most essential component to a well-executed photograph is the photographer’s vision and way of seeing. Hope your travels are going well, Sally

As Julius Schulman said: “The camera is the least important part of photography”. I always remind myself of this when I have “camera envy”.

Great photo. It doesn’t matter with what or how the final picture is achieved. It is the result that matters. Beautiful! 🙂

Gorgeous photo Katie, and you delivered the message so many young and/or budding photographers need to learn. It’s not the camera that delivers the amazing shot any more than it’s the stove that prepares the delicious meal. I’m a big fan of your work; keep up the great shots!!

Great photo Katie! And you are so right in saying that it is not necessarily the equipment, but the eye and imagination of the artist behind the camera. Keep up the great work!
