Train by a Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
I took this photo eleven years ago, when I took the summer off, packed my car with my dog, my camera, and my camping gear and headed out all over the Northern US and up into Canada. Oh, it was a good summer.
I wasn’t a professional photographer at that point, just someone who had been taking photos since I was a young girl, and who just loved it. Nature and landscapes were what I took, as that’s what I did. And on this trip, I saw more than I had ever seen before.
My favorite place on this trip was a place that stole my heart —Â Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. To this day, it still ranks as the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, with so much nature and wildlife, and some really nice people too. It felt like home to me, and someday I hope to make it back there. It truly is a special place.
This photo was taken late in the afternoon. I had gone for a hike with my dog (we had even met up with a black bear, which was both scary and a dream come true (: ), and we ended up at this lake — just me and my dog and some ducks. I was busy taking photos when I noticed a rainbow, and then the train came in, and I though, “Oh, this is good.”
I don’t have very many of my old film images digitized, but this one just brings back such wonderful memories, and I still do like this image.
Shot taken with a Minolta Maxxum 3xi (consumer film 35mm SLR) with a 70-210 lens and scanned into the digital world.

A wonderful shot Katie, with a rainbow too! I travelled on that railway in the 70’s. It’s simply God’s country.

Great image (as always)! 🙂 As I’m saying now and then it’s interesting to watch compositions that aren’t always in the classic rule of thirds.

What a great shot! When I first came out west from Ontario I worked in Jasper in the back country for an outfitter for the summer – it was wonderful ! I am hoping to go there this Easter weekend and will post the photos. 🙂 Jane

Wow! This is spectacular! Truly a special photo. It looks like a dream…the rich color makes it look like a beautiful movie still. I mean that in the best possible way. You know how in movies, things tend to look extra-beautiful because of all the touch-ups they do. That’s what this photo has, that sense of extra beauty. Amazing, Katie!

I love the perfection of the reflection in the water and the partial rainbow make the composition all the more unique. Looks like a great area to camp, sit by the water’s edge and just Be.
