Nice and Normal – Night at the Parking Garage

Here’s another Nice and Normal photograph. If you’d like, you can see the other images here.

Way back when, I posted a cool photo of some concrete barriers at night. I took this image on the same evening.

On the other side of the New Mexico State Capitol, there is a parking garage, that is just fine, but not something I’d like to really take photos of for its architectural merit.

But put some darkness around it, and oh yeah, I’d like to shoot it. (: Night, well actually dusk, brings drama to a subject, and it also isolates and simplifies it; the way I like my photos. So I shot the pedestrian entrance to the parking garage, and here it is.

As a note, I didn’t use a tripod, although I should have. Being that it was night, I pumped the ISO all the way up to 2200, which allowed me to handhold my lens at a shutter speed of 1/160. That high of an ISO added some noise/pixelation into the image, which would be distracting if the photo was enlarged, but for this size, and with not trying to lighten the shadows, it’s fine.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Shot with my 105mm lens at f/2.8.

  1. You’ve given this garage a certain grandeur! If you hadn’t mentioned the word “garage” one might have thought it was some kind of temple! Nice one, Katie!

  2. You caught and captured nice contrast in this garage… You are amazing as always, Thank you dear Katie, have a nice weekend, with my love, nia

  3. Have I ever told you I love parking garages? Well I do. This is fantastic. Modern concretism. They are especially wonderful if they are underground or at night with all the sparse light and shadows. Love this image. Well done.

  4. Wonderful lighting here, and the photo has come out so well. Loved it. 🙂

  5. The play of lines is beautiful, as are the colors.

  6. When I looked at this, I saw an optical illusion. The structure is interesting, but at first look, I thought I saw sky.

  7. Pretending it’s not a garage, I see myself walking between pillars into a sacred temple. I love how the shadows of the night obscure the realities of the day. Beautiful use of light. So very warm.

  8. Cool lighting!

  9. How cool! Fantastic lighting.

  10. Great composition, Katie!

  11. Great contrast and composition. I agree with you, I think if this was taken during daylight, it would not have that dramatic effect.

  12. Fantastic lighting and shapes 🙂 great photo

  13. Wonderful light and lines!

  14. Anyhow this looks like rendered with a 3d Software. It looks surreal.. dont get me wrong.. it looks impressive. The lightning is great and makes all materials very clean looking like in a 3d application. 🙂

  15. Night can often make the ordinary look special. I have lots of fun doing night shots, and really should do it more often. Nice work!

  16. Love the ambience of this photo!

  17. nice lighting.

  18. This looks so clean and crisp for a parking garage. Great lines and shapes. Nice shot!

  19. Interesting lighting in this garage. Makes all the difference to what would otherwise be an ordinary shot in the daytime.

  20. I like how the light and dark define the shapes.

  21. Pillars of gold! Moody and atmospheric…
