A Simple Pretty Flower for a Sunday – 5

Here’s the fifth installment of “A Simple Pretty Flower for a Sunday.” These posts have actually become some of my most popular images, so thank you! Because of that, I’m going to keep up with this practice. You can view all the earlier Sunday flower posts on this page.

Today’s flower is another Dahlia that I shot at the Farmer’s Market in early October.  I was just taken aback by the color of this Dahlia, and I wasn’t sure if it would photograph well, but once I started looking at it, and how the light was hitting it, I just knew how I wanted to capture the flower — all petals and curves and depth and dark and light.

It was early morning and the flower was in the shade, so I had to use a wide open aperture (lower number), but I liked the effect of the narrow depth of field on this flower. I don’t think you need to see everything perfectly clear in order to clearly see an object. Or maybe that’s just my excuse for not bringing along my tripod. 🙂

I hope you enjoy the simple flower for this Sunday. It truly is one of my favorites; something in this photo just makes me want to revere this little flower. Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

Shot with my Nikon 105mm macro lens at f/3.3.

  29. Oooh. Very simple and pretty and flowerlike! Love the light and the colors.

Don’t worry about the wide aperture– some of us with point-and-shoots covet the low DoFs ya’ll with real cameras can accomplish. Man, if I ever got a DSLR, I’d keep the aperture set on f/3.3, all the time, for every inappropriate reason.

  30. Oh so beautiful!
